Differences between WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007

WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 are both powerful collaboration tools made available by Microsoft. Built on the .net platform, many businesses today rely heavily on either one or both products to communicate, collaborate, and share critical business information to contribute information and make decisions based on the most up to date information.
WSS 3.0
MOSS 2007
Windows SharePoint Services (WSS3.0) comes free with Windows Server 2003.
MOSS is not free and it is installed on top of WSS
3.0.MOSS has both a server cost and a client access
license (CAL) cost.
WSS is part of Windows Server, specifically Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008.  It is not automatically installed.  You must first install IIS (Internet Information Server) and ASP.NET 2.0, plus .NET 3.0. The important thing to understand is WSS is part of your Windows Server license.
MOSS costs more than WSS because it requires its own licensing, and it requires purchases of other software and optional hardware
It is suitable for small to medium scale projects. WSS allows small organizations to set up and host internal web sites and spaces. The setup and deployment is uncomplicated, and there is little to no assistance needed from IT professionals. An individual with basic knowledge will suffice.
MOSS builds on top of WSS and adds additional  components such as enhanced search, My Sites, Business Data Connector, Excel Services, and other features.
Although MOSS sits on top of the WSS foundation, it has many feature bonuses. The additional functions may prove to become beneficial for larger scoped organizations and projects

it may take a bit more expertise from an IT authority to set it up effectively.
It also serves as a platform for application development. Including such IT resources as portals, team workspaces, e-mail, presence awareness, and Web based conferencing,  Windows SharePoint Services enables users to  locate distributed information quickly and efficiently, as well as connect to and work with  others more productively
Moss also offers My Sites, which are individual minisites that can be set up to show who in your
company you're connected to, what your tasks and
skills are, your contact information, and more.
MOSS 2007 is the portal system, comparable to
SharePoint Portal Server 2003. It brings a wealth of
built-in functionality and interoperability to a
company's intranet over and above the functions of
WSS 3.0
WSS is a collaboration platform, primary used for sharing and managing information and documents via a web site. The following are the most essential features:
The following are the most essential features:
  • Site provisioning – WSS acts as a site provisioning engine that simplifies the process of creating new web sites. These sites can be provisioned via site templates or site definitions
  • Document management – WSS provides support for document checkout before editing, the ability to view revisions to documents and restore to previous versions.
  • Web Parts Infrastructure – web parts are special controls which can be added to certain areas of a web page (Web Part Zones). These controls enable end users to modify the content, appearance, and behavior of Web pages directly from a browser.
  • Integration with Word, Excel, Access, Outlook -  users can directly open a document from the server, without the need to download it first.
  • Wikis, Blogs – wikis are supported as a site template, which allows you to create new pages        quickly and easily, provides automatic linking and WYSIWYG editor. Blogs are supported as a site template as well, which provides features for article posting, reader comments and RSS feeds.
  • Email integration  – document libraries, discussion boards, calendars, and announcements can be configured to send emails upon new postings.
  • Limited search support – WSS is is limited to showing results from the site and all of its subsites.
  • Basic workflows support – you can create workflows, but you will need external tools like Visual Studio to do so. WSS is just a container that executes your workflow.
  • Mobile devices support – the information is rendered using simplified text format.
  • Server Farm – if you need high scalability, you can install WSS in a server farm mode which means that several machines will run the stateless presentation layer and all of them will be connected to the same SQL Server database.
  • Forums - Team Discussions, replacement for team e-mail discussions
  • Task and issue management
  • Presence and communication - Knowing who is online and how to get hold of them
  • WSS 3.0 also introduces Content Types, which are a great way to manage different types of documents, templates and metadata
  • All standard DMS functionality is out-of-the-box, including version control, check-in/out and the ability (linking with Outlook 2007) to take documents offline.
  • You can create RSS feeds and set up alerts to notify you when content changes on a site. Version control, task notification and alerts all come with WSS 3.0
